Best known for his impeccable inlay work, Santo Domingo Pueblo artist Daniel Coriz is also an exacting necklace maker. The preparation of his materials is given every bit as much attention as the actual execution of the job of assembling them, thus making him one of the finer jewelry artists of the pueblo.
This six strand necklace is a rich mix of red Mediterranean branch coral (drilled on the transverse) strung in combination with fine-diameter silky smooth baby olive shell heishi. This is very fine, well-polished coral in a true shade of red (not orange). The baby olive shell heishi gives the strands wonderful fluidity and supple movement. Where the branch coral beads leave off, baby olive shell heishi takes over in short runs to the Sterling cones at the catch. A matched set of double-loop earrings accompanies the necklace. An extension chain allows further adjustability of length.
