This is Volume Two in Dr. Gregory Schaaf's American Indian Art Series. This book focuses on the Tewa Pueblo potters of Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, San Juan, Tesuque, Nambe and Pojoaque. These are the Tewa-speaking pueblos of the valley of the Rio Grande River in Northern New Mexico. This is a guide to Pueblo pottery designed specifically for the collector and consists primarily of artist biographies paired with photographic examples of the potters' works. The artist biographies provide birth dates (when known), information about family lineage, awards won by the potters and titles of other publications in which the artists' works have appeared.
This volume provides a brief history of the potting traditions of each of the above-listed pueblos, includes family trees of renowned potting families of these pueblos and includes some market valuation information based on auction prices for pieces by the best-known artists. The book is divided into six major sections, each dealing with one of the pueblos listed above. Artist biographies, therefore, are contained within the section relating to the specific artist's pueblo of origin. An extensive bibliography comprises the last six pages of the book.
