Born in 1949, Hilda Coriz is the sister of Santo Domingo's most renowned potter Robert Tenorio. Until her husband's death a few years ago, she and Arthur Coriz collaborated on their pottery and signed their "Arthur & Hilda." Now, working alone, she signs simply as "Hilda" with a pictograph of a pot and sometimes includes the year the pot was made. Hilda's awards are too numerous to list, but since 1983 she has received several first, second and third place awards (in various categories of pottery) at Santa Fe Indian Market. Hilda is the mother of potter Ione Coriz and taught her daughter the craft. Hilda's pots are painted with natural vegetal paints and mineral pigments and she fires her pots outdoors with wood in the traditional fashion. Hilda's biography and several photos of her work (alone and with deceased husband Arthur) can be seen on page 104 of Dr. Gregory Schaaf's book Southern Pueblo Pottery: 2,000 Artist Biographies. The Tenorio family as a group also has the distinction of meriting an additional full-color page in Dr. Schaaf's book and more of Hilda's pieces can be seen on page 24.
This medium-sized jar features birds and florals, which are among Hilda's preferred motifs. The painting is bold, with her black paint applied thicker than she often does. As with most Santo Domingo pottery, this piece is not perfectly symmetrical but still has good shape and is not off balance. As always with Hilda's pieces, this is painted only with natural paints and is wood-fired outdoors.
