Calvin Martinez is consistently one of our favorite silversmiths and excels in every one of his smithing endeavors. His designs are particularly compelling, melding the tenets of Navajo Traditional Revival jewelry with his unique capacity to hybridize the traditional. This pin is a holloware piece, meaning that it is made from two separate pieces of sheet silver (a flat sheet which serves as the backing and a convex portion which rises above the plane of the flat back) which form a hollow body within the piece. The soft-cornered, rectangular stone of natural, untreated Turquoise Mountain turquoise from Arizona is set in a shadowbox cut-out. It's a nice elongated pin with a long pin mechanism to make it pierce cloth properly and distribute the weight of the piece. Hallmarked "C.MTZ" inside an arrowhead and stamped "Sterling" on back.
