Calvin Martinez is one of our favorite silversmiths because of the exacting workmanship that he brings to the fine details of his work. The stones he uses in his pieces are of fine quality and particularly well cut. This is a large pair of earrings showing Calvin's easily-identifiable design style. He set perfectly matching stones of natural, untreated Chinese turquoise in these earrings. Though this turquoise would commonly be referred to as webbed stone because of the matrix, the turquoise deposit actually occurs in pointillist dots. This is specific to this fine quality of Chinese turquoise which we see very little of today. This is older Chinese turquoise, not geologically speaking, but in terms of the era when this quality of turquoise was imported from China. This represents some of the earliest imported Chinese turquoise dating from the mid to late seventies.
