Anne Qumyintewa Hopi Overlay Pin/Pendant Kokopelli & Kiva

This pin depicts a Kokopelli figure paying his flute in front of a kiva. The stairstep design is intended to represent the rooftop of the kiva with the four dots along the edge representing the vigas which support the roof. What may appear to be a tic-tac-toe sign is the top of the ladder extending through the sipapu (or entry hole) to the kiva on its roof. Sipapu is the Hopi word used for this entry hole to the kiva and also means vagina and indicates the hole the Hopi passed through to come to the surface of the earth and enter the Fourth World after the Third World was destroyed by flooding. Kokopelli is a character imbued with mischief and sexuality. His humpback is considered to hold seed and represents latent fertility. In Hopi erotica, Kokopelli is one of the few figures depicted in graphic displays of sexuality. There are both male and female Kokopellis. This is no accidental depiction of the symbolic Kokopelli figure just outside the sacred walls of the kiva. Pictographic hallmark and stamped "Sterling" on the back.

Dimensions: 1 3/16" diameter
